Avignon | Pont Saint-Bénézet and Palais des Papes

View from Île de la Barthelasse in eastern direction. This 12th-Century stone arch bridge once spanned both branches of the Rhône. Only four of the arches remain. The bridge is a major landmark of Avignon and has become famous through the 15th-Century folk song "Sur le pont d'Avignon". The cathedral and the Palais des Papes appear in the right portion of the photograph.
