View from Rocca Maggiore in southeastern direction. Assisi was built on the lower northwestern slope of Monte Subasio (1290 m), which partly consists of the red limestone seen in the foreground. This town is well known as the place of birth and death of Francis of Assisi. But the site had been inhabited long before, as there are still some remnants of an ancient Roman settlement.
