13th Century National Park | Birches

Birches (Betula sp.) growing on a granite outcrop. This example shows that trees are generally better adapted to more porous substrates such as found on jointed granite. The trees' deeper root systems, compared to grasses and herbs, may explore water from deeper layers where it is protected against evaporation.
