White Island is the only active marine volcano of New Zealand. It rises approx. 320 m above sea level, but 1600 m above the sea floor. Besides a number of eruptions, this stratovolcano has displayed post-volcanic activities almost continuously since it was discovered by Captain Cook in 1769.
