The dormant stratovolcano Parinacota (6348 m) appears on the right side, Volcán Pomerape (6282 m) just behind its left flank. The hummocky landscape goes back to a 6 cubic kilometres large rock/debris avalanche originating from a volcanically induced collapse of a slope of Volcàn Parinacota approx. 8,000 years ago. The Laguna the Cotacotani, shown in the left portion of the image, was influenced by this event. However, its origin is most likely related to glacial processes.
