Tajikistan-Afghanistan Bridge at Tem-Demogan

WI_tj738.jpg

Location: near Khorog. This 135 m long suspension bridge crossing the Panj River was opened in 2002. It was the first of a couple of bridges constructed between the Tajik and the Afghan Pamir with the support of the Aga Khan Development Network. A periodic market is held on the Tajik side of the bridge (lower portion of the photo). Border crossing for Afghan traders is facilitated in order to boost the economy of the extremely isolated and economically challenged Afghan part of the Pamir which is socio-culturally closely linked to the Tajik part.
