Panoramic view from Monte Somma across the valley of the Atrio di Cavallo to the main cone of Mount Vesuvius (Cono Grande, 1281 m). Monte Somma represents the rim of the caldera in which the main cone has formed since the eruption of 79 AD. The highest peak of Monte Somma (Punta Nasone, 1132 m) appears near the left edge of the image, the city of Naples in the right background.
