View towards southwest. The position of the coastline - and therefore the size of the island - is determined by the equilibrium between episodic lava flows into the sea and the more continuous acting coastal erosion. The characteristic features of pahoehoe lava are seen in the lower right portion of the image. The trees on the right side belong to the species Casuarina equisetifolia (filao).
