The ancient footpath in the left foreground is the Chemin des Anglais, paved by basaltic rocks since 1775. In earlier days it was an important connection between Saint-Denis and the western and southern coasts of La Réunion, avoiding the coastal cliffs. It now serves as a popular hiking path crossing some of the drier parts of the island, whilst the road traffic uses the Route du Litoral (right background). This motorway is undergoing reconstruction at some distance to the cliff due to a high risk of rock fall.
