The reactivation of the Soufrière Hills Volcano in 1995 has resulted in major changes in the landscape. Pyroclastic flows and lahars have created new land in the E part of Montserrat since 1996. A huge cone of volcanic material has formed at the former mouth of the Tar River. It is slowly eroded by fluvial processes and the sea.
