The Pu'u 'Ō'ō cone in the East Rift Zone of the shield volcano of Kīlauea has been developing and continuously erupting since 1983, having produced some cubic kilometres of lava covering more than 100 square kilometres. The pahoehoe lava shown in this image dates back to the period 2002-2004.
