The town of Nikel, located in the very NW of the Kola Peninsula, is strongly linked to nickel mining and processing. It was founded in 1936, when the area belonged to Finland. The nickel smelter, which caused major environmental impacts and unhealthy conditions, was closed down in 2020, 18 years after this photo was taken.
