Plymouth, the capital of Montserrat, was permanently evacuated in 1996 after the nearby Soufrière Hills Volcano had reactivated. Since then it has been almost completely buried in pyroclastic flows and lahars. The buildings in the suburb of Town Hill still exist, but the area - and the entire S part of the island - remain an exclusion zone.
