Farewell Spit | Bird Sanctuary
WI_nz402a.jpg Farewell Spit | Bird SanctuaryThumbnailsFarewell Spit | In the dunes

This sand spit forms the northern border of the Golden Bay. It is 32 km long, at a length of 26 km it rises above sea level. The extended tidal zone towards the Golden Bay offers favourable feeding conditions for a variety of sea birds, but it also represents a trap for whales which frequently beach in this area. The birds seen in the picture are black swans.
